LEEMTE (VOID)

LOUW VENTER | 9 MIN | SOUTH AFRICA | 2014

LEEMTE is an Afrikaans word meaning void – a space that should be filled but isn’t. The film deals with the unexpected complexities that face Jamal, a troubled Muslim gangster, upon being released from prison and coming home to his mother and his girlfriend, Samiah. What should be a joyful homecoming is marred by a creeping paranoia about the community he enters as an outsider, a sense of impotence and inability to meet expectations.
